New Audi A4 2.0 TDI with 136HP and 4.4lt/100km [53.5mpg]


Audi is extending its A4 range in Europe with the addition of a new and more fuel efficient 2.0 TDI version that is available in both sedan and Avant (Audi talk for Station Wagon) body styles. This variant of the VW Group's 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine produces 136HP (100 kW) and 320 Nm (236.02 lb-ft) of torque, the latter being available between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm.

In addition, both the A4 Saloon and Avant 2.0 TDI benefit from the use of a six-speed manual transmission with lengthened gear ratios and forged 16-inch alloy wheels shod in 205/60 low rolling resistance tires. The aerodynamic tweaks to the body and a lower ride height complete the package.

The end result of all these changes on the sedan is a combined fuel consumption of 4.4 liters of diesel per 100 km (53.5 mpg US) with CO2 emissions of 115 grams per km (185.07 g/mile). In comparison, the A4 with the 143HP 2.0 TDI consumes 5.0 lt/100km or 47 mpg US. As for the A4 Avant, it returns 4.6 liters (51.1 mpg US) and 120 grams (193.12).

According to Audi, CO2 emissions have been reduced by four and nine grams, respectively, compared with the previous models.

In terms of performance, the sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 215 km/h (134 mph), while the Avant completes the standard sprint in 9.8 seconds and tops out at 208 km/h (129 mph).

Both the A4 2.0 TDI sedan and Avant models are offered in the Attraction trim line, with prices in Germany starting from €31,600 and €33,250, respectively.



Jaguar Styles up XF Saloon with new Black Pack Kit


Jaguar UK has released a new styling kit for the XF saloon, called the Black Pack. Available on the XF Diesel S, 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 petrol and XFR models, the £950 factory package improves the premium saloon's visual appeal without going overboard.

Those that opt for the Black Pack will get 20-inch Draco alloys, painted in dark grey, gloss black grille and window surrounds, and a choice of several exterior colors, selected to maximize the car's visual impact.

The company said six colors (Polaris White, Spectrum Blue, Ultimate Black, Stratus Grey, Lunar Grey and Liquid Silver) can be order for all variants, while the Kyanite Blue and Salsa Red colors are unique to the range-topping XFR.

"The Black Pack gives the XF a highly distinctive, very modern and a slightly edgy appearance," said Geoff Cousins, Managing Director, Jaguar UK.

For an even more dramatic effect, customers can pair the Black Pack with the XF Aerodynamic Pack on Diesel S models. Launched earlier this year, the latter includes a re-profiled front bumper, black mesh inserts for the grille, lower air intakes and side sills borrowed from the XFR.

Volvo Looking to Claim Title of World’s Fastest Hybrid Truck


After improving a previous world speed record for the standing kilometer in June 2010 with a diesel model, Volvo Trucks is now developing a new diesel-electric hybrid version called "Mean Green" to claim the title of the World's Fastest Hybrid Truck in spring 2011.

A well known Swedish truck racing ace, Boije Ovebrink, is going to be the one to drive the hybrid and he's already very confident of a positive outcome. "I'd go so far as to say that 'Mean Green' is the world's fastest hybrid truck," Mr. Ovebrink said.

"I started building the truck from two half frames that had been earmarked for the scrap yard and the American VN cab came from a crash-tested chassis whose cab was totally intact," explains Volvo engineer Olof Johansson.

Conventional oomph comes from a 16-liter Volvo engine, fitted with Volvo Penta twin turbos that increase peak output to a whopping 1,900 hp (1,417 kW). The electric motor adds another 200 hp (149 kW) and 1,000 Nm (738 lb-ft) of torque to this explosive cocktail and can interact with the driven wheels through a modified I-Shift automated gearbox.

Weight reduction is crucial when you want to set these kinds of records, so Volvo engineers milled a new, 43 kg (95 lbs) lighter front axle and also removed the gear set for the first gear, as it was rendered useless by the huge amount of torque. That shaved off another 7 kg.

Even Mr. Ovebrink takes part in these weight-saving efforts. " They made me promise to lose 20 kilos and, so far, I'm half-way to my target," said the truck racing driver.

The first test runs will take place this month, so we'll be keeping an eye open for any updates.

Citroën adds "BLACKCHERRY" Edition and New EU5 HDi Engine to C3 Picasso's UK Range


For the new model year, Citroën has updated the range of its UK market C3 Picasso with the addition of a limited edition version called the "BLACKCHERRY " and the introduction of a new Euro 5 HDi 110 diesel engine matched to a 6-speed transmission.

The new C3 Picasso BLACKCHERRY is based on the VTR+ model with power coming from a 90HP 1.6-liter turbo diesel engine. The model stands out from the rest of the series with the cherry red and glossy black exterior and interior detailing, roof bars and 17-inch cherry red diamond-tipped alloy wheels. It is offered exclusively in a premium black metallic body finish.

Standard features include air conditioning, cruise control with speed limiter, Connecting Box (USB socket & Bluetooth® system), electrically adjustable door mirrors and front electric windows. On-the-road prices start at £15,195.

In other news, the French carmaker's small MPV will be offered with a new Euro 5 1.6-liter turbo diesel engine delivering 110HP and linked to a 6-speed gearbox. Citroën says fuel economy is just under 59mpg UK on the combined cycle with CO2 emissions down 5g/km over the Euro 4 unit to 125g/km.

Citroën also added a Connecting Box (USB and Bluetooth connectivity) as standard specification on the VTR+ and Exclusive trim levels.

The updated C3 Picasso goes on sale across Britain on November 1st.





BMW Gains UK Police Approval, Announces 330d Saloon Interceptor


Good news for police officers bad news for tax-payers in the UK; Hyundai (see here) is not the only maker to be approved as a key supplier for all 52 Police forces around the country by the National Policing Improvement Agency. BMW has also received the agency's blessings, which means the Bavarian firm's cars and motorcycles will become standard issue to the UK's Policemen and women as part of the four-year deal.

Crime fighters in blue will be able to get behind the wheel of cars such as BMW 330d Saloon and Touring, 530d Saloon and Touring, all variants of X1, X3 xDrive20d, X5 xDrive30d and xDrive40d, while the R1200 RF-P Police bike is also on the menu.

Aside from the latest 5 Series models, which are an all-new addition to Police fleets, BMW also announced a specially modified 330d Saloon Interceptor as its High Performance Pursuit Vehicle.

In civilian form, the 330d comes with a 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six diesel delivering 245HP, which accelerates the sedan from 0 to 62mph [100km/h] in 6.1 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph [250km/h].

According to BMW, the UK Police force-spec 330d Saloon Interceptor features special upgrades but the company said it couldn't reveal full technical details of the car "for security reasons".

Tim Abbott, Managing Director of BMW UK, said: "This is excellent news for BMW and shows the breadth of appeal of the products we sell. We have a very strong commitment to the 'Authorities market' throughout the world and have a very close relationship with the UK's Police forces. Orders for BMW Police vehicles started as long ago as the mid 1970s in the UK. This latest news reaffirms our commitment to 21st Century policing."

And just so you know, the Bavarian firm said that some of the BMW police vehicles will be unmarked and perform "less visible policing roles."

Rare Find: 1984 Lincoln Continental with Factory Installed BMW Straight-Six Turbo Diesel


Did you know that Lincoln offered its mid-1980s Continental sedan and Mark VII coupe models with a factory-installed BMW straight-six turbo diesel? It may sound bizarre -to say the least- but it is true.

The BMW-sourced 2.4-liter inline-six turbo diesel engine, which was used in the shark-nosed 1980s 524TD, delivered an output of 115HP and was backed by a ZF four-speed automatic transmission. It was available optionally in 1984 and 1985 on the Continental sedan and Mark VII coupe models instead of the standard 140HP 4.9-liter gasoline-fed V8.

One of these extremely rare [since few buyers opted for the diesel] BMW-powered Lincolns has been found for sale on Craigslist with the asking price set at $2,800.

"This is a limited edition from Lincoln, it is only 1 of 2500 ever made. It has a 2.4 liter BMW turbo diesel form the factory. This car is in very good condition, It has always been stored for the winters and has no rust. The mileage is unknown because the odometer is digital in it dosen't work. It runs and drive great. It was purchased from an estate sale about 5-7 years ago. This car is all original. Seats are NOT ripped but worn a bit. This is a Rare car you will not find another one of these for a long time."

New Audi Q7 3.0 TDI with 204HP V6 Diesel


A new EU5-compliant diesel engine has been added to the European range of its recently updated Audi Q7. The 3.0 liter V6 common-rail turbo diesel that drives Audi's large SUV delivers an output of 204HP (150 kW) and 450 Nm (331.90 lb-ft) of peak torque available between 1,250 and 2,750 rpm.

As with all Q7 models, the 3.0 TDI features a start-stop system that deactivates the engine as soon as the vehicle comes to a stop, and an energy recovery system that stores energy during deceleration, as standard. An eight-speed tiptronic transmission and quattro permanent all-wheel drive round out the drivetrain package.

Ingolstadt's diesel-powered SUV accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 202 km/h (126 mph) with the standard suspension, and 205 km/h (127 mph) with an optional air suspension.

Audi says the Q7 3.0 TDI consumes 7.2 liters per 100 km (32.7 mpg U.S.) on average with CO2 emissions of 189 grams per km (304.17 grams per mile).

In Germany it will cost buyers €51,800 [about US$71,800] to get into the SUV.




2011 Mitsubishi Outlander with New 2.2-liter Diesel and 2WD Variant Announced for the UK


Following the limited release of the special edition Outlander Juro in July, Mitsubishi UK has announced details and pricing on the series production version of the facelifted SUV. On sale now, the 2011 Outlander with the Evo-like snout is offered with two turbo diesel engines, a new Mitsubishi-developed 175HP 2.2 Di-D matched to a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 154HP 2.2 Di-D turbo diesel SST PSA unit combined with a twin clutch automated manual transmission.

For the first time in Britain, Mitsubishi is also presenting a two-wheel drive diesel variant of the Outlander which is available only with the 175HP unit that returns a combined fuel economy of 46.3mpg UK compared to 43.5 mpg UK of the equivalent 4WD model.

Prices, including 17.5% VAT and the delivery costs but not Government Road Fund Licence and First Registration Fee, start from £21,549 for the base model with the 154HP diesel and 4WD.






2011 VW Passat B7 Facelift: New Gallery with 50+ Photos


We first showed you the redesigned 2011 Volkswagen Passat B7 at its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show earlier this month, but thanks to the German automaker, we now have a plethora of new images that were released as the car goes on sale across Europe.

Available in both sedan and station wagon forms, the B7 Passat will be offered with a total of ten diesel and petrol engines ranging from the efficient 1.6-liter TDI with 105HP and a combined fuel consumption of 4.2 lt/100 km [56 mpg US] to a 300HP V6 unit combined with all-wheel drive that accelerates the saloon from zero to 100km/h (62mph) in just 5.5 seconds. TSI and V6 / Petrol and Natural Gas Direct-Injection Engines – Five Charged Four Cylinder Engines and One Six Cylinder

The petrol engines of the Passat output 90 kW / 122 PS (1.4 TSI), 118 kW / 160 PS (1.8 TSI), 155 kW / 211 PS (2.0 TSI) and 220 kW / 300 PS (V6). The top engine has six cylinders, while all other petrol engines are charged four cylinders. Also charged is a 1.4 TSI with 110 kW / 150 PS that is configured for natural gas (EcoFuel). A derivative of the 1.4 TSI is the MultiFuel engine (118 kW / 160 PS) that is designed for use with petrol fuel with up to 85 percent ethanol content.

1.4 TSI with 90 kW / 122 PS

The 1.4 TSI with optional BlueMotion Technology is the most fuel-efficient petrol engine. It outputs 90 kW / 122 PS (at 5,000 rpm), and in the BlueMotion version it only consumes 5.9 l/100 km (or 138 g/km). The turbocharged TSI develops its maximum torque of 200 Newton-metres between 1,500 and 4,000 rpm. The four cylinder enables a top speed of 205 km/h (Estate: 202 km/h). The Passat saloon handles the classic 0-100 km/h sprint in 10.3 seconds (Estate: 10.6 seconds). This engine version is available with an optional seven-speed DSG.

1.8 TSI with 118 kW / 160 PS

The 1.8 TSI develops its maximum power of 118 kW / 160 PS from 5,000 rpm. On this four cylinder engine, the development team reduced combined fuel consumption from the previous model's 7.4 l/100 km to 6.9 l/100 km on the new model; the CO2 value attained here is 160 g/km. The turbocharged four cylinder is exceptionally torque-strong (maximum of 250 Newton-metres between 1,500 and 4,200 rpm). With this engine, the saloon reaches 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds (Estate: 8.7 seconds); its top speed is 220 km/h (Estate: 218 km/h). The TSI can be combined with a seven-speed DSG as an option.

2.0 TSI with 155 kW / 211 PS

The fuel economy improvement on the 2.0 TSI with 155 kW / 211 PS (previously 200 PS) is significant; this turbo engine now has a combined fuel consumption of 7.2 l/100 (Estate is also 7.2 l/100 km), which is 0.6 litre less than on the previous model. Accordingly, CO2 emissions were reduced from 183 to 169 g/km. The large TSI, which debuted in the Golf GTI, develops its peak power from 5,300 rpm. Its maximum torque of 280 Newton-metres lies between 1,700 rpm and 5,000 rpm. The Passat 2.0 TSI can move at a fast 238 km/h (Estate: 235 km/h). The saloon handles the sprint to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds (Estate: 7.7 seconds). Available as a special option here is a six-speed DSG.

V6 4MOTION with 220 kW / 300 PS

The combined fuel consumption of the top version - the Passat V6 with 300 PS and 4MOTION all-wheel drive - now comes in significantly lower at 9.3 l/100 km (previous saloon: 9.8 litres). The new CO2 value is 215 g/km (Estate: 215 g/km). The six cylinder engine develops its maximum power of 220 kW / 300 PS at 6,600 rpm, its maximum torque of 350 Newton-metres is available at 2,400 rpm. The six cylinder accelerates the saloon to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds (Estate: 5.7 seconds). In both body versions, the car's top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. Shifting work is performed by a six-speed DSG as standard equipment.

1.4 TSI EcoFuel with 110 kW / 150 PS

One of the lowest emitting models of the medium class is the Passat EcoFuel; in the new version, a combined fuel consumption of 6.6 m3 natural gas per 100 km has been determined (Estate: 6.7 m3 per 100 km); this corresponds to CO2 emissions of just 117 g/km (Estate: 119 g/km) and a 0.4 m3 reduction in fuel consumption. Thanks to dual charging by turbo and supercharging (Twincharger), the Passat EcoFuel is considered one of the sportiest natural gas vehicles in the world. The saloon can move at a fast 214 km/h and accelerates to 100 km/h in 9.8 seconds; values for the Estate version are 212 km/h and 9.9 seconds.

1.4 TSI MultiFuel with 118 kW / 160 PS

Based on the twincharged 1.4 TSI, a 118 kW / 160 PS MultiFuel Twincharger was developed especially for use in Sweden and Norway. This petrol engine can be operated with fuel that has an ethanol content of up to 85 percent. Fuel economy and driving performance values will be announced at market launch in Scandinavia.

TDI and BlueTDI / Diesel Direct Injection Engines – Four Charged Common Rail Four Cylinder Engines

Four turbodiesel engines are being offered at three power levels; the four cylinder engines output 77 kW / 105 PS (1.6 TDI), 103 kW / 140 PS (2.0 TDI and 2.0 BlueTDI) and 125 kW / 170 PS (2.0 TDI).

1.6 TDI with 77 kW / 105 PS

The most fuel-efficient version of the new Passat is the 1.6 TDI BlueMotion with 77 kW / 105 PS (from 4,400 rpm) and 250 Newton-metres torque (from 1,500 rpm). In the previous model, this engine already delivered fabulously low fuel consumption values. An aerodynamically perfected design, additional internal engine fine-tuning and technologies such as the Stop/Start system and battery regeneration have reduced fuel consumption in the new Passat BlueMotion (Saloon) by 0.2 litre to 4.2 l/100 km; that is equivalent to a CO2 value of 109 g/km (Estate: 4.4 l/100 km and 114 g/km). The Passat 1.6 TDI BlueMotion has a top speed of 195 km/h and accelerates to 100 km/h in 12.2 seconds. Values for the Passat Estate with this engine are 193 km/h and 12.5 seconds.

2.0 TDI with 103 kW / 140 PS

Fuel consumption was also reduced on the Passat 2.0 TDI with BlueMotion Technology that outputs 103 kW / 140 PS from 4,200 rpm; 4.6 litres (equivalent to 119 g/km CO2) nearly matches the value of the 105-PS BlueMotion model of the previous generation. The 2.0 TDI BlueMotion Technology can call upon 320 Newton-metres of torque from 1,750 rpm, reaches 100 km/h in 9.8 seconds and has a top speed of 213 km/h. The Estate also has a combined fuel consumption of 4.6 litres and 120 g/km CO2 emissions. This estate car accelerates to 100 km/h in 10.0 seconds and attains a top speed of 210 km/h. Optional: a six-speed DSG.

2.0 TDI with 125 kW / 170 PS

The combined fuel consumption of the strongest Passat TDI with 125 kW / 170 PS is 4.6 l/100 km (120 g/km CO2) as a saloon – this is 0.9 litre less than on the previous model. The 170 PS Passat Variant TDI consumes 4.7 l/100 km (123 g/km CO2). This TDI also operates with common rail injection. Its maximum power lies at 4,200 rpm. Between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm, the engine develops its maximum torque of 350 Newton-metres – sufficient power and force to accelerate the Passat to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds (Estate: 8.8 seconds). The car's top speed is 227 km/h (Estate: 224 km/h). Like the 140-PS version, the strongest TDI may also be ordered with a six-speed DSG.

2.0 BlueTDI with 103 kW / 140 PS

One of the lowest emitting turbodiesels in the world is used in the Passat 2.0 BlueTDI. In the Passat, the 103 kW / 140 PS (previously 143 PS) engine already meets requirements of the Euro-6 emissions standard, which does not take effect until 2014. To further reduce levels of nitrogen oxides, this Passat is equipped with a standard SCR catalytic converter. In the new generation of the Passat 2.0 BlueTDI, fuel consumption has been reduced by an additional 0.6 litre to just 4.7 l/100 km (equivalent to 122 g/km CO2). These values apply to both the saloon and the Estate.

The sixteen-valve four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1,968 cm3 develops its maximum power at 4,200 rpm. 320 Newton-metres maximum torque is already available from 1,750 rpm. These key parameters let the turbo engine accelerate the Passat to 100 km/h in just 9.9 seconds; its top speed is 213 km/h. (Estate: 10.0 seconds and 210 km/h). Volkswagen also offers the Passat BlueTDI with an optional six-speed DSG.

SCR Catalytic Converter

The SCR catalytic converter of the Passat BlueTDI together with the additive AdBlue selectively converts nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the exhaust stream into nitrogen and water. This is in addition to an oxidation catalytic converter and diesel particulate filter which are also used to reduce the entire range of emissions. AdBlue is carried in an auxiliary tank. It is sprayed into the exhaust stream by a module downstream of the diesel particulate filter and oxidations catalytic converter. The fluid is metered according to the exhaust mass flow rate. Engine management ensures precise control based on information from the NOx sensor.

Finely atomised by a screen, the urea is converted in the hot exhaust gases upstream of the SCR catalytic converter. In the SCR unit, it reacts with the nitrogen oxides, which it converts to nitrogen and water. AdBlue is nontoxic, odourless and biodegradable; the average consumption rate is about 0.1 litre per 100 kilometres.

Six and Seven-speed DSG – Efficient Dual Clutch Gearboxes

Except for the TDI with 77 kW / 105 PS, any of the other engines of the new Passat may be combined with a dual clutch gearbox (DSG). This is a six-speed or seven-speed DSG, depending on the engine's torque. Both DSG versions are characterised by maximum economy and dynamic shifting performance never before realised to this degree. Besides differing in the number of forward gears, the two DSG units also differ technically in the types of clutches used. While two dry clutches operate in the seven-speed DSG, the dual clutches of the six-speed DSG operate wet in an oil bath. This is true of both gearboxes: Even highly experienced drivers cannot approach the shifting speeds of the DSG gearboxes. More than any other automatic, the dual clutch gearboxes also have the potential to reduce fuel consumption and thereby emissions. Compared to an automatic with torque-converter clutch, this advantage may amount to up to twenty percent depending on the engine.

Meanwhile, the two DSG versions are specialists at their given tasks. While the six-speed DSG shows excellent performance with torque-strong engines (up to 350 Newton-metres) thanks to its broad torque range, the seven-speed DSG is especially well adapted for use with smaller engines (up to 250 Newton-metres).
