Vauxhall is the latest firm to launch a sexy diesel concept. The Eco-Speedster is based on the VX220 but features sleek carbon-fibre bodywork to cut drag to Cd 0.20. Its 1.3-litre CDTI common-rail diesel gives 112bhp and 113mpg. Initial tests have seen the Eco-Speedster top over 155mph and Vauxhall says there's even more to come. The concept marks Vauxhall's massive push into the diesel market. By the end of 2003 it will offer four all-new diesel engines with power outputs of up to 177bhp.

The presence of the spectacular Eco-Speedster concept at the British International Motor Show marks the start of the biggest diesel offensive in Vauxhall’s history. From now until the end of 2003 Vauxhall will introduce, across the range, four all-new diesel engines with power outputs up to 177 hp. The launch of Eco-Speedster marks the start of this new emphasis on diesel power. It demonstrates how lightweight aerodynamic bodywork and a new 1.3 litre CDTI common rail diesel engine can achieve an amazing top speed combined with miserly fuel consumption.
